Reading:
This week we will continue to read in the Wonders book and then practice the skills presented in their chapter books. Wonders has a weekly assessment to check reading comprehension skills and vocabulary. We are currently using these assessments to help teach the children test taking strategies and critical thinking skills. As you might notice you look at the assessment, time has been spent going over the questions and test taking process. Just keep in mind that the children are still learning and developing their test taking strategies and are not at an independent level at this time.
Math:
We are wrapping up Unit 2 mental math strategies. This is a skill that will be practiced throughout the year. As you may notice that for many children it is a new way of thinking, making the unit more challenging but as time goes on it will become a part of their math thought process.
We will also begin Unit 3, which focuses on addition computation and algorithms. All students should know their addition facts to an automatic level. We encourage you to practice for mastery at home.
Grammar:
Our focus continues to be complete sentences. We have been working on simple and compound subject and predicates and recognition of complete sentences vs. sentence fragments.
Spelling:
This week's focus is on the long 'o', spelled /oa/, silent e, /ow/ and /oe/. With so many different spellings of the long 'o', please help your child to practice their words each night.

Book Buddies
Book Buddies
- All of 3rd grade has started book buddies, where each child reads with a kindergartener once a rotation for the school year. This helps the students practice their oral reading skills. Also, a very special bond develops between the third grader and their book buddy as the year progresses.
- Next week we will begin our novel studies. The children will be applying the comprehension skills that they have previously learned and continue to learn through the short stories read in Reading Wonders. There will also be a focus on adding quality details and text evidence in their novel responses, restating the question, and answering in complete sentences. Also, children will be learning many new vocabulary words. Our main goal is to have students use newly learned vocabulary in their speech and writing.
- Presently we are working on mental math and estimation in chapter 2 of our Math in Focus books. Students are practicing manipulating numbers to make them more “brain friendly” for computation without pencil and paper.
- In class this week the students will begin working on writing a recipe for friendship, where they will practice their sequencing skills from our reading. They will have on-going practice with descriptive and meaningful sentences, using adjectives, adverbs and prepositional phrases.
- We are currently studying sentence types and fragments, along with subject/ predicate.

If your child completes any assigned work in class, like an assigned math paper, they may put a check by it or cross it off. If reading is completed, we would still like them to read a total of 15 minutes in an outside book. If assigned math work is completed, then they should study math facts. Please continue to check the assignment notebook each night so we know you have seen all messages and are aware of his/her assignments.
Spelling:
This week we will have our first spelling list. The spelling list should come home tonight. The final test will be on Friday, August 26th. You can also check out www.spellingcity.com/KarenAyres our spelling website, for a fun way to practice.

Monday Folders or Once A Week Folders will not be coming home today.
A lot of the classwork we have been doing are assessments, which we will keep. Look for Monday Folders or Once a Week Folders to come home next week.
Daily Silent Reading
We have asked that all children have a chapter book to read in their desks at all times. Throughout the day students will be asked to read their book for 10 to 15 minutes. We request that these books stay at school until completed.
Picture Day is Wednesday, August 31st!
Camp Tecumseh:

Welcome to Third Grade!!
Your children have begun school full of excitement, enthusiasm, and with a little bit of nervousness. We will spend the first couple of weeks getting to know your child, both academically and personally. It is a critical time of the year when relationships are established. Our goal is to establish a safe environment where the children will grow and feel comfortable taking risks.
The beginning of the year is also a time where routines are established. We have provided each child with folders for the different subject areas, a three ring binder for spelling and a red marble notebook for journaling.
Third Grade is a year where you will notice many changes in your child. Because of their need for socialization, it is beneficial for them to enter the classroom at 7:50. Those first 5 minutes provide the children time to touch base with their friends and their teachers. We also will begin our community building activities at 7:55. If your child is late to school, they will need to report to the office before coming into the classroom.
You may send a water bottle with your child to school tomorrow. We allow students to keep a water bottle on their desk so they can remain hydrated and alert during the day. It may only contain plain water (no flavored or vitamin water, no fruit juice, milk, soda, etc.) Students may not share their water bottle and should take them home every Friday to be washed. We reserve the right to remove this privilege if a student is misusing his/her water bottle. Please make sure the water bottle has a secure closing on top. Your child may also bring a small, healthy snack for the afternoon. (Please provide a snack that is peanut free, can be eaten quickly, and will be the least distracting to classroom time.)
Gym Shoes
Children will need a separate pair of gym shoes that will be kept in their personal locker in the gym.
Appropriate Dress for Outdoors
Please make sure you send your child with appropriate clothing for the changing weather.

Happy New Year!
We hope everyone had a fun and relaxing vacation! Thanks for all your help and support the last week before break! It was a week filled with many valuable experiences for the children.
The children were excited to return to school today and talk with each other. Getting back into the routine always takes some time, so we will do our best to ease the children into their academics.

Grades:
- Starting second semester you will find more percentages and/or letter grades on some of your children's work, allowing them to become accustom to grades before entering fourth grade. Please help us make this a positive experience. Just a reminder, third grade does not put letter grades on any of the report cards.
Here is the scale when letter grades are assigned:
- A= 90-100
- B= 80-89
- C= 70-79
- U (unsatisfactory) below 70
- This week students will be reading short folktales in our Wonders Reading Unit 3. We will focus on the reading skills of problem and solution and unique character traits.
- The rule this week is r-controlled vowels. Please remember that students can use Spelling City to practice during the week. In addition, please continue to practice the first 300 sight words. Students will continue to take tests over these words when they return.
- This week we will finish up unit 7 on multiplication. Students will be applying basic multiplication facts to larger number algorithms. Unit 8 will focus on long division. Memorization of basic multiplication facts will allow them to compute with more speed and accuracy.
- Each student will choose a famous American to portray in our Living History Museum. We would like students to focus on people who have made a positive impact on our society. Today, students will receive a calendar and instruction sheet that will help them manage the reading, writing, and presentation parts to this project. A copy of these two items will also be placed on the blog by the end of the week. You will be invited to view your child’s presentation at school on Friday, February 5, 2016. Details and times will be sent in the next couple of weeks.
- Please have your child bring in another box of Kleenex to be shared with the class for second semester. THANK YOU!
- Please remember as the weather gets colder, students need to have warm coats, gloves, hats, and boots when we go outside for our early morning recess.
- January 18th- No School for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day
- Friday, February 5, 2016 Third Grade Living History Museum
- Thursday, February 11, 2016 Valentine’s Day Party at school

Reading
- We will be reading Benjamin Franklin, Young Printer this month. We will model note-taking and how to construct a timeline on a famous American's life.
- This month we will be studying the syllabication rules. We will also be testing on the 300 basic sight words. Spelling City has the first 300 sight words broken down into groups of 25. We will send a paper copy home of the sight words. This will be an ongoing study. We will ask students to take sight word tests in class and if they do not pass, they will practice at home and take test at school again.
- This is the link to the website: http://www.spellingcity.com/karenayres/
- If you get the Ipad App, the printing of the test results is not present. You must use this link, not the App.
- We will be reviewing the concepts taught this semester. This week, students will be asked to write about their Thanksgiving break. Their paragraph should include one highlight from their weekend that can be developed into a descriptive paragraph. Students are required to have a topic and closing sentence and use at least five meaningful adjectives.
- All students need to learn their multiplication facts 0 - 9 to an automatic level. We will be giving timed basic fact tests throughout the week. The next three math units will be application of the facts so it is imperative that they know their facts.

Reading
- Until Thanksgiving break, the children will be reading in their Wonders books. Last week the children studied about elections and voting. This week the children will be studying about saving animals that are close to extinction. After Thanksgiving the children will be reading a biography about Ben Franklin that will lead into our Living History Museum, which is a project that is a focus in January and February.
- In conjunction with the story about the danger of extinction for the manatee, each classroom would like to adopt a manatee at a total cost of $20 per classroom. If your child would like to bring in some "piggybank" change (of no more than one dollar), it would be appreciated and make the difference in the life of a manatee. Ginger, Flicker and Elsie are waiting to adopted.
Math
- We have completed our bar modeling unit. Our new unit will focus on multiplication and division properties, reviewing facts 0-5 and learning the facts 6-9. They will be introduced to the commutative and associative properties, along with array, area and equal groups models. Your child should be practicing their facts nightly until learned to an automatic level.
Living History Museum
- For future planning, we have selected the date of Friday, February 5th for our Living History Museum. This is an event where the children dress up as a Famous American and give a short one minute speech. Parents enjoy coming and watching their child perform, so save the date!

(Please no candy, cookies or food of that sort.)
